CNET Reviews Amiglia

Rafe Needleman reviewed Amiglia's family software on ALPHA The CNET blog:

Cnet Amiglia brings structure to a data management problem that desperately needs it. The tagging architecture of Flickr and Riya only gets us part of the way in organizing photos. Amiglia lets us build tight social networks that reflect the way we think about the people closest to us. Amiglia's add-ons to this structure are well targeted to navigating this network: There's a Java-based game for children, where they get to identify family members; and there are mapping tools to show destinations on a family vacation. Geneology.About.com recommends to Amiglia your family tree

Kimberly Powel from Your Guide to Geneology at About.com posted an extensive review about our family software today:

Amiglia Your Family Tree

A new Web site shows a lot of promise as a way to build collaborative family trees. Built as a way to connect families - both across miles and generations - Amiglia is not a traditional family tree application, but more of a family tree photo album. It offers easy ways to share the latest family photos with each other, as well as to display and connect the oldest photos of common ancestors.

PressaboutIn concept Amiglia is basically just another online photo album like Flickr, but the family tree option is an interesting twist for genealogists. Albums can even be connected to each other, making it a great way to connect photos and profiles from living relatives for a family history book or upcoming reunion. When you upload new photos to your own album, they also get automatically uploaded to any related families albums. Instant sharing! You can also create a single family site, and provide your relatives with separate family passwords for upload rights, edit rights, etc.

Integration with Google Maps provides a neat way to share photos and reports from genealogical research trips, or even to display the migration of your ancestors in an interactive format. You can also produce a map that identifies all of your photos by location - fun for families spread out across multiple locations.

Amiglia still needs a bit of work. Family relationships such as step-parents, adoptees, etc. take extra work to identify (you have to establish divorcees as a married relationship, for example, and then edit from within their profiles) or can't be accurately portrayed at all. You also can't see an entire family tree at once, only browse through branch by branch. The site is still in development, however, with suggested changes and additions being implemented regularly.

Amiglia Basic is free, but limited to seven additional family members with contribution rights and 1GB of storage space for photos and videos. $49.95/year allows an unlimited number of people in your family album and 100GB of photo storage (about 20,000 high res photos) - it's a family membership, with the annual fee covering your entire core family. Amiglia Premium offers unlimited photo uploads and unlimited linked Amiglia sites for $99.95/year.

Best of all, the site is still in the final stages of beta - and is offering free lifetime memberships to anyone who signs up now. Amiglia is definitely worth checking out. Once you've played a bit, come back and tell us what you think!

Amiglia is a Favorite in Lockergnome's Windows Fanatics newsletter

Brandon Watts of the Lockergnome's Windows Fanatics newsletter posted a really nice write-up about Amiglia's family software today:

Although it can be very tough sometimes, it’s vital to help keep families together. It’s truly a shame if you can’t look to your family for support. One of the main reasons why the family structure disintegrates over time for some people is because of a lack of communication. If the various members aren’t making an effort to stay in touch and keep each other updated as to what’s going on, then erosion and collapse is inevitable over time. It may be hard to imagine the fact that a Web site can help to unify your family, but with Amiglia, that just might be the case.

The site is unique in its creation because it was originally created by a family for their family. When they realized that they had a good thing going, they then developed it further and opened it up to you and I. You'll be able to share photos, create slideshows, and document the memories that were made on various family trips. Along with this, you're also given the ability to create a family calendar and an interactive family tree, which links you to the profiles for the people within your family. One of the most interesting concepts is the game that they have built for toddlers. By using pictures and sound recordings, you can help your little ones to get to know their relatives in a simple, fun, and safe way.

Cool Mom Picks Amiglia

Cool Mom Picks did a great review about Amiglia and our new Who's That Kids Game today

PopPop? Uncle Marty? Who are They?

As a military family, we do our best to keep everyone posted on the goings on of the first Amiglia_1  grandchild. But, let's face it, I can barely keep track of my own relatives, let alone my husband's huge family. And, while we try to send dvds and get our daughter to talk on the phone to "DeeDee and Poppop," we still get the guilt ridden comments about how they don't think she knows who they are anymore.

So, that's why I'm thinking about signing up for Amiglia, a family tree and photo album website that helps you keep track of your family. Amongst its numerous features, you can share photos (including old family photos), keep a record of upcoming birthdays and special events, and create an interactive family tree. One of my faves is the kids game called "Who's That" in which family members can record sound bites to go with their pictures; kids can then guess who's in the picture by listening to the recording (or vice versa).

It's a great way to stay connected and to insure that you will never miss a birthday OR that your daughter will most certainly know her relatives by face and sound. And, if you sign up now, you will receive an Amiglia membership FREE for one year.

So, if you have an interest in family trees, connecting with your relatives, or are just a people-pleaser like me, than I suggest you grab a membership. My only concern is that now we'll have no excuse for why we forgot Aunt Helen's birthday. ~ Kristen

New Features Live: Songs, Recipes and Stories on Profiles

So we had a great rush of feedback from our last surge in traffic. Thanks for all of you who are contributing so much to the shaping of Amiglia during this Beta period.

Critical New Features Live this Afternoon:

  • Add Unlimited Favorite Songs to People's Profiles
  • Songs Play on People's Profile Slideshow
  • Add Favorite Recipes to People
  • Add Stories from People's Profiles
  • Add Songs to your Front Page SlideShow

One thing to note -- because of the filesize of the MP3s, using the ActiveX or Java Version of the uploader is still necessary. We're going to work out a Flash8 alternative as well.

Let us know with your thoughts!

More Updates - Tag to Events / Concepts / Vacations

This one was a bit overdue in coming, but you can now edit/tag a photo to multiple themes, so that for example you can have a concept "pregnant" and have that photo show up also in vacation "puerto rico"
As always let us know with questions and feedback as you get a chance to use it.

A Great Review from Talking tech about Family 2.0

Rachel Cook from Talking tech about Family 2.0 wrote a very detailed positive review about Amiglia.com today:

Amiglia what an interesting name, I am getting used to pronouncing it. I have just road tested the site and I must admit I am getting hooked…It's a great geneology site. What? you say… well it's has a cool family tree feature that allows you to build your current family tree and also create extended family members in separate trees. What's unique is that the family tree is dynamic in that you can move your mouse over the tree and it grows and moves in the direction you are looking at, fantastic when you have added in so many family members!!! What's more is each member has a photo and their own profile… It really motivates me to now go in and add in our ancestry and that of other family and extended members.

Photo sharing
As I upload photos to my own album and family, and I am part of other related families or albums my photos also get uploaded automatically to those related families albums. I like this, this is real time sharing.

I am also impressed by the idea of capturing your travels, with photos, animated maps and share this with others. I would see this in the future been a tool that could be syndicated to other travel community sites, like Virtual Tourist. Similar to the ability to import your flickr photos into Amiglia. I will test this out if I travel to the Blogher Conference (a big trip from where I will be coming from)…
Facebook feature is nice, it gives you the ability to look at all your family members, pets etc, some sites do incorporate this at some level, like at myspace.com and at Minti however it's a neat social networking feature that enhances the community feeling.

Don't forget family birthday's
The family calendar is very useful, you won't forget family members birthdays, their kids birthdays (or your pets) and you also have a chronological view of your photos. It's well thought out logic about what families want in organizing their photos and family profiles. In a sense it gives families a greater meaning and uniqueness. We should be proud of our family and linage and be excited to share this time capsule with future generations.

The slideshows are awesome! With music, pictures, tag photos…Amiglia has put a lot of thought into offering meaningful Family 2.0 features. My wishlist would now have to be a look and feel design flavoring Web 2.0 and Social Networking dressings, ability to see the entire famly tree including related trees, ability to move the top position on the tree if it's not correct and add music files to my profile so others can see what music I like or what music my kids like. Another awesome feature on my wishlist would be the ability to create a podcast/video and have access to the parent to parent advice-opedia info, like my Minti articles and introduce Amiglia to other families I have met on Minti. (but it's my wishlist… :)

I think now, gaining traction and membership is really important for Amiglia and hopefully Family 2.0 sites can work together on this. You are doing great things for making family important and giving it a face!!! Well done!!!

ñblog calls Amiglia an excellent new photo service
